An Acrylic on Canvas by Norman Clifford, 1998.
World War 1 over the Western Front.
Lt Sims was reasonably new to No 4 Squadron,
Australian Flying Corps, and although he had
2 enemy aircraft to his credit, was caught with
a sluggish engine and lagged behind his flight.
2 enemy aircraft jumped him. Sim’s flight leader,
Captain Roy King, saw what was going to happen,
wheeled around but had no time to rescue him.
The petrol tank was immediately behind Sims –
it was on fire – he either burned in the machine
or jumped. He chose the latter near Armentieres, France.
He was the only Australian to be brought down in flames.
